Karl joined MARCOM in 2016 after retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard as a Marine Safety Specialist/Chief Warrant Officer 4 with almost 28 years of dedicated service.
During the first 18 years of his Coast Guard career, Karl held a variety of marine safety, security and environmental response positions as an enlisted member. He earned qualifications as a Pollution Investigator, Waterfront Facility Inspector, Marine Safety Boarding Officer, Federal On-scene Coordinator’s Representative, National Strike Force Hazmat Response Technician, Harbor Safety Officer, and as a Marine Investigating Officer. His tours of duty stretched from Mobile, Alabama to New York City to Valdez, Alaska and Honolulu, Hawaii.
In 2005, Karl earned a degree from the University of Phoenix in Marine Environmental Technology, and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in 2006. He spent the last 10 years as a Marine Inspector with tours in Houma, Lake Charles, and Port Arthur, Texas providing new construction oversight and regulatory inspections on a variety of workboats, barges and ships along the Central Gulf Coast. As a Senior Marine Inspector, he provided technical expertise, training, and team leadership in the enforcement of U.S. regulations, treaties, and international conventions including SOLAS and MARPOL requirements, MTSA/ISPS security regulations, and the Coast Guard’s Alternate Compliance (ACP), Streamlined Inspection (SIP), and the Tank Barge Streamlined Inspection (TBSIP) programs.
Karl received his Category 3 SIRE accreditation in April 2016 and conducts SIRE inspections on inland and offshore chemical and oil carrying barges, inland and offshore towing/pushing vessels, as well as ATB units.
